3 Tips for a Safe Return to Work

It’s finally that time—the time that everyone has been anxiously awaiting. Businesses are beginning to reopen (albeit, slowly)—but reopen nonetheless. It’s an exciting time, giving employees and business owners something to look forward to and to plan for in the coming weeks.
We wanted to share some tips for a safe return to work because we understand that your concerns have not gone away, and it’s important to us that our clients, partners, and community members stay healthy and safe.
Here are 3 tips to help establish a safe working environment amid COVID-19:
1. Continue physical distancing & make it easy to do so.
There are a number of things you can do to your workspace to make it easier for your employees to distance themselves physically. We get it—this whole situation has been a lot to take in and everyone (especially business owners and leadership teams) have been forced to adapt. While this is adding another item (or, if we’re honest, several items) to your to-do list, it is worth it to your employees, your business, and the community at large. Keeping workspaces clean and safe will allow you to stay in business and continue your operations.
So, here’s what you can do to protect your workspaces TODAY:
- Increase separation between desks, workstations, and common areas (remove every second chair in waiting rooms for example).
- Stagger appointments and meetings.
- Modify schedules (within reason) so that there are fewer people to work around per shift.
- Add visuals (i.e. signage with arrows for one-way traffic or tape near printers/copiers and in lunchrooms to demonstrate 6 feet spacing).
2. Put new hygiene policies in place.
As we slowly shift back into our routines, it’s important to bring the new hygienic habits that you/your employees have developed at home into the office.
- Encourage regular (and 20 second) handwashing and supply/be sure to refill soap regularly.
- Put hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes on employee desks and/or in high-traffic areas of the office.
- Stick to a cleaning schedule—highly used items should be disinfected regularly (any handles, keyboards, and shared equipment).
3. Encourage employees who are feeling unwell or displaying a higher than average temperature, to stay home.
